Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

The birth of Ava DuVernay occurred on August 24 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative talents when she was a young girl due to her aunt Denise. Her aunt was an overnight nurse in order to give her the opportunity to study art and literature, or even theater. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay was taught by her mother that the art form could be utilized as a tool for activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to show her creativity through art. DuVernay resided in Compton throughout her youth, however she would spend every summer with her father's extended family located in Lowndes County Alabama. DuVernay's Dad recalled seeing the Civil Rights Movement's historic march along the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. She went to the University of California Los Angeles to obtain degrees in English in addition to African American Studies. DuVernay was in college when she became attracted to the field of production for television journalism. Her first job was as an intern with CBS News, during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay recalls being tasked to sit at the house of one member of the jury, and then examine their junk. The duties she was required to accomplish left her unsatisfied and so, after deciding not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move into the industry of publicity. DuVernay was hired straight from college to be an assistant publicist in an unassuming studio. The year 1999 was the time she launched her own business of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency established several lifestyle platforms such as Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
